Overview
Comfort Where Ductwork Can't Reach
Some spaces just never get comfortable — a converted garage, a sunroom, a bonus room over the garage, a home office, a workshop, or an addition the original system was never sized to cover. A ductless mini-split fixes that without tearing into walls to run ducts. Mark Johnson & Sons sizes, installs, and services mini-splits across Ruston, Monroe, West Monroe, Shreveport, Bossier City, and Grambling.
A mini-split pairs a small outdoor condenser with one or more indoor heads, each with its own thermostat, so you only condition the space you're actually using. That's efficient in Louisiana's long cooling season, and because most units are heat pumps, they take the chill off our mild winters too — right down through the occasional hard freeze. They run quiet, and with no ducts there's no 20–30% duct loss dragging down efficiency.
What we install and service
- Single-zone systems — one outdoor unit, one head, for a single room, garage, or shop (typically 9,000–24,000 BTU)
- Multi-zone systems — one condenser feeding 2–5 indoor heads, each independently controlled
- Head styles — wall-mount, ceiling cassette, and low-wall/floor console units
- Brands we install and service — Mitsubishi, Daikin, plus Fujitsu, LG, and the mini-split lines from Carrier and Bryant
Single-zone vs. multi-zone
One head handles one open space beautifully — a shop, a sunroom, a master bedroom. When you're conditioning a whole addition or several rooms that each need their own setting, a multi-zone condenser feeding separate heads is the right call. We size to the room's actual heat load, not a rule of thumb, so you don't pay for zones or tonnage you don't need — an oversized mini-split short-cycles and never pulls the humidity out, which matters in our climate. A single-zone unit is also the cheapest, most efficient way to solve one stubborn room without touching the central system that's already handling the rest of the house.
What Mark Johnson & Sons does differently
We pull a real vacuum on every line set and verify the charge before we call it done — a rushed install that skips this is the number-one reason a mini-split fails early in our humidity. Our own licensed techs run the line set through a small, tidy penetration, mount the head level so the condensate drains right, and register the manufacturer warranty. Ask about our Classic Membership — your mini-split gets covered in the Spring AC tune-up along with priority scheduling and 15% off any repair.

Warning signs
When a mini-split is the right call
Ductless shines in the spots a central system struggles with — and it's the practical fix when running ductwork isn't.
A room that's always hotter or colder than the rest of the house
A garage, shop, or sunroom with no ductwork at all
An addition or bonus room the central system can't keep up with
A home office or nursery that needs its own temperature
You want to cool one zone without running the whole system
An older home with no ducts where adding them isn't practical
High electric bills from cooling rooms nobody's using
A window unit you're tired of hauling in and out — and hearing
A garage apartment or she-shed you want comfortable year-round

Efficient & quiet
Cool the room you're in, not the whole house.
With no ducts to leak and a thermostat per zone, a mini-split only conditions the space you're using — efficient through a long Louisiana summer, and heat-pump warm on cool days.

Mini-split vs. Central AC vs. Window units
Three ways to cool a space that doesn't have — or doesn't need — a full duct system. The right one depends on the space, your budget, and how long you'll live with it.
| Feature | Ductless Mini-Split | Central AC | Window Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $3,500 – $6,000 (single-zone) | $4,500 – $10,000 (whole home) | $150 – $600 each |
| Best for | Additions, shops, one hot room, no ducts | Whole-home comfort with existing ducts | A temporary or single-room stopgap |
| Efficiency | Highest — no duct loss, inverter-driven | Good, but 20–30% duct loss is common | Lowest — leaks air around the sash |
| Heating | Yes — heat pump down through a freeze | Only if paired with a furnace/heat pump | No (cooling only) |
| Noise & looks | Very quiet, wall-mounted head | Quiet, hidden in ducts | Loud, blocks the window |
| Lifespan | 15–20 years | 12–18 years | 3–8 years |
FAQ
Ductless Mini-Split FAQs
Very. Our long, humid cooling season is exactly where ductless efficiency pays off, and since most units are heat pumps they handle our mild winters too. No duct loss means more of what you pay for actually reaches the room.
