Overview

Straight Talk About Boilers in North Louisiana

Boilers are less common in North Louisiana than furnaces and heat pumps — our mild winters mean most homes here were built with forced-air heat. But plenty of older homes, custom builds, and radiant-heat systems around Ruston, Monroe, West Monroe, and Shreveport run on a hot-water or steam boiler, and when one goes down, you need a licensed crew that actually knows the equipment. That's us.

Mark Johnson & Sons repairs, maintains, and replaces residential boilers. Because we're a combined plumbing and heating company, boiler work sits right in our wheelhouse — it's as much about water, pressure, and piping as it is about heat. The tech who shows up is on our payroll, no subcontractors, and every quote is flat-rate, given before any work starts. The service call is waived when you have us do the repair.

What we service

  • Hot-water (hydronic) boilers — gas and electric, cast-iron and condensing, feeding radiators, baseboard, or radiant-floor loops
  • Steam boilers — the older systems still found in some North Louisiana homes
  • Circulation and pressure components — circulator pumps, expansion tanks, air separators, fill and pressure-reducing valves
  • Controls and safeties — aquastats, relief valves, low-water cutoffs, gas valves, and ignition controls

Repair vs. replace

If the boiler is under 15 years old and the repair is reasonable relative to a new unit, repair usually makes sense — circulators, expansion tanks, and controls are routine, affordable fixes. Once you're facing a cracked heat exchanger, a badly corroded block, or repeated failures on a 20-plus-year-old unit, replacement is the smarter money. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line you're on and quote both flat-rate.

What Mark Johnson & Sons does differently

Most heating companies around here won't touch a boiler because they don't understand the water side. We do. We chase pressure problems to the actual source instead of just topping off the fill valve, bleed trapped air so every zone heats, and verify the safety controls cycle correctly before we leave. Because boilers are rare locally, parts sometimes have to be ordered — but we carry common circulators, expansion tanks, and controls and get you heat back as fast as anyone can. On a replacement we handle the near-boiler piping, the permit, and old-unit removal in-house, so you deal with one crew from start to finish.

Ask about our Classic Membership — it includes a seasonal heating tune-up tailored to your boiler plus 15% off any repair, which is the cheapest way to keep a boiler reliable and safe.

Warning signs

Signs Your Boiler Needs Attention

Boilers usually give warning before they fail outright. If you're seeing any of these, get it checked before a cold snap.

  • No heat or weak heat to the radiators or floor loops

  • System pressure gauge reading too low or climbing too high

  • Banging, knocking, or gurgling sounds when the boiler fires

  • Water pooling or dripping around the boiler or piping

  • Circulator pump humming but not moving water

  • Pilot or burner won't stay lit, or the unit keeps locking out

  • Cold radiators or rooms that used to heat evenly (trapped air)

  • Relief valve weeping or discharging water

  • Boiler is 15+ years old with rising repair frequency

The Process

How a Boiler Service Call Goes

Mark Johnson & Sons technician checking boiler pressure and circulator at a North Louisiana home

On the truck

Professional tools, parts, and diagnostics — every call.

  1. On-phone triage

We ask what type of boiler you have, its age, and what it's doing — no heat, a leak, odd noises, or a lockout. If there's active leaking, we roll sooner.

  2. Full diagnostic on-site

The tech checks system pressure, the circulator pump, expansion tank, relief valve, low-water cutoff, and safety controls, then walks you through what's wrong.

  3. Flat-rate quote

You get the repair price up front. If the boiler is a replacement candidate, we lay out honest options and real numbers before you decide anything.

  4. Repair or service the system

Common parts — circulators, expansion tanks, relief valves, controls — we source and install. We bleed trapped air and reset pressure so the loop runs right.

  5. Test, verify, and clean up

We fire the boiler, confirm even heat across the loop, verify the safety controls cycle correctly, and leave the equipment room clean.

FAQ

Boiler Service FAQs

No — forced-air furnaces and heat pumps are far more common here because of our mild winters. But older homes, custom builds, and radiant-floor systems around Ruston, Monroe, and Shreveport do run on boilers. We're one of the few local crews that service them, since boiler work is as much plumbing as it is heating.
