Overview
Kitchen clogs are 90% grease — and 90% fixable in one visit
When your kitchen sink stops draining, it's almost always grease, food scraps, and soap that have built up in the horizontal run between the trap and the wall. Hot water and dish soap go in for years; the grease cools, hardens, and slowly closes off the pipe. Most kitchen clogs are between 18 inches and 6 feet downstream of the trap — close enough that a hand cable or small drum auger clears them on a first pass. Hydro jetting handles the harder cases.
Double basin sinks are the most common call. Water backs up into one side when the other drains, or both sides stand full. That's a clog past the tee where the two basins meet. We start at the trap, work outward with a 1/4" or 3/8" cable, and most jobs wrap in 30-60 minutes flat.
What we clear
- Grease and soap buildup — by far the most common kitchen clog. Hot water + dish soap + 5 years = closed pipe.
- Food scrap clogs — pasta, rice, potato peels, celery fiber, eggshells. Most belong in the trash, not the disposal.
- Foreign objects — kid's toy, twist tie, broken glass, jewelry. We catch and remove rather than push downstream.
- Garbage disposal clogs — usually upstream of the discharge tube; we clear without dismounting the unit.
- Mainline backups — clog at the kitchen seems isolated but is actually downstream of the laundry too. We diagnose with camera.
- Vent blockages — if water gurgles back up after draining, the vent is clogged, not the drain. Different fix.
What we use
- Sink auger / hand cable (1/4" - 3/8") — first attempt, 30-90 minute job
- Drum auger / power snake (1/2" - 3/4") — for stubborn clogs deeper in the line
- Mini hydro jet — high-pressure water for grease-coated pipe walls, restores full pipe diameter
- Camera inspection — if clogs keep coming back, $185 add-on confirms whether you have a slope, root, or pipe-wall issue
Kitchen clog issues in North Louisiana
Hard water is a factor here. Calcium scale builds inside the drain pipe just like it builds on faucets, and grease sticks to scale better than to clean copper or PVC. Soft-water homes have noticeably fewer kitchen clogs. We mention this only if you're getting repeated clogs — sometimes the right answer is a softener install, not a fifth snake job.
Older galvanized drain pipe. Homes built before 1970 sometimes still have galvanized drain lines that have rusted into a rough, pitted surface that grabs grease. If we snake your kitchen drain four times a year, the long-term answer is replacing the run with PVC, quoted by how accessible the line is.

Warning signs
Signs Your Kitchen Sink Is Clogged
Catch it early — a slow drain becomes a backed-up sink in days.
Water drains slowly, takes more than 30 seconds to clear basin
Standing water in one or both basins
One basin fills when the other drains (double sink)
Gurgling sound when water drains
Bubbling water back up through the disposal or strainer
Kitchen sink backs up when dishwasher runs
Bad smell coming from the drain even after running water
Water under the sink in the cabinet (clog forced a leak)
Disposal won't drain even after clearing the chamber
Repeat clog within 30 days of the last clearing

Don't pour hot water on it
Hot water + grease = clog moves further down the line.
DIY drain clearing usually pushes the clog past where you can reach. We clear, we don't push. Same-day.

The Process
How a Kitchen Sink Clog Call Works

On the truck
Professional tools, parts, and diagnostics — every call.
Quick assessment
Tech looks at the sink (single, double, with or without disposal), tests both basins, and identifies whether the clog is at the trap, in the horizontal run, or deeper. Usually 5 minute diagnosis.
Flat-rate quote
Cable clearing, drum auger, or hydro jet — you see all three prices before we start. We default to the smallest tool that will clear the clog. Most kitchen clogs don't need hydro jetting.
Clear the clog
Pull the trap, run cable through the wall stub-out, work the clog free. 30-60 minutes for a standard cable job; 60-120 for stubborn deeper clogs. We catch debris in a bucket so it doesn't reload the line.
Test full flow
Run both basins fully open for 60+ seconds, run the disposal, run the dishwasher if connected. Look for gurgles, bubbles, slow drain — anything that says the clog is not fully cleared.
Camera inspection (optional)
If this is your second or third clog this year, $185 to camera the line and find the root cause — slope issue, scale buildup, root intrusion, or a section of pipe that needs replacing.
30-day warranty
Same clog comes back within 30 days, we re-clear at no charge. Most clogs stay cleared for 1-3+ years with normal use.

FAQ
Kitchen Sink Clog FAQs
We default to the smallest tool that clears the clog and only escalate if the cable can't reach it. Standard hand cable clearing handles most kitchen clogs in 30-60 minutes and is the cheapest option. A stubborn clog that needs a drum auger steps up from there, and hydro jetting for grease-coated pipe is the top tier. You get the flat-rate price for the tool before we start.
