and loved ones who suffer from diabetes. This chronic disease affects
over 29 million Americans. As a metabolic disease, it blocks the production
of insulin, resulting in increased levels of glucose in the body. National
Diabetes Awareness Month takes place in November of each year and is also
celebrated worldwide for World Diabetes Day on November 14.

What is World Diabetes Day?

Diabetes impacts people all over the world. We celebrate World Diabetes
Day on November 14 by taking part in many runs, walks, bikes, telethons,
information sessions and other fun and informational activities designed
to raise awareness for this chronic disease.

How do Diabetics Manage their Illness?

Although diabetes is a chronic disease, it’s possible for those who
suffer from it to live long and dynamic lives. There is no cure for diabetes;
however, there are many things that people can do to manage the illness.
Some of the most effective ways to manage diabetes on a daily basis include:

One of the most important things for a person with diabetes to have in
his or her lives is a strong support system. Having family members who
understand the illness and are compassionate and empathetic about certain
lifestyle changes will make managing the disease a lot easier. Some ways
you can support your diabetic loved one includes:

  • Encouraging them to take part in sports or physical activity by taking
    part in it as well.
  • Helping them manage their diet by cooking them healthy foods.
  • Letting them know that diabetes is not a death sentence and with proper
    nutrition and care, they can still have fun and live a happy and healthy life.
