Signs Your Boiler Needs Maintenance

You should be able to get at least 15 years out of your boiler. But to keep it operating at peak efficiency and prolong its lifespan, it will need occasional maintenance. That means you’ll need a professional HVAC technician to inspect it any time you notice something out of the ordinary.

Watch for the following signs that your boiler needs some work.

A Yellow Flame

If your boiler’s flame is yellow instead of blue, it is a sign that carbon monoxide is present. Black soot is another indication that carbon monoxide levels are increasing. Since carbon monoxide does not have an odor, you cannot smell it. As soon as you see a yellow flame, get your boiler inspected and fixed. If carbon monoxide builds up, it could become fatal.

Heating Problems

Pay attention to how fast your boiler heats up. If it is working correctly, it should take just a few seconds to heat up. When your boiler is not working properly, it may take several minutes before you feel any warmth.

Leaks

Your boiler should never leak. If you notice any leaks, it means there is a broken valve or seal somewhere. A single leak could eventually turn into an expensive flood, so you need to get it fixed right away.

Rising Fuel Costs

Sometimes, your fuel costs are higher because the fuel source costs more than before. If your bill increases because your boiler is actually using more fuel, then your boiler is less efficient and it should be inspected right away.

Bottom line: Pay attention to anything out of the ordinary. A higher fuel bill or a yellow flame could be a sign of a dangerous problem. If you think your boiler is in need of repairs, contact Mark Johnson Plumbing at (318) 257-6167.
